Åsens by - a culture reserve

Åsens by is an example of what a Småland village looked like 100 years ago, with small fields enclosed by fences.

In summer there are lots activities suitable for children and it is even possible to stay at the youth hostel, situated i the centre of the reserve Åsens by.

Horses are used for some of the farm work. Old varieties of wheat, rye, oats and barley are grown. Gardens vary in style depending on tradition and the interests of previous owners. The kitchen garden includes old varieties of vegetables and herbs. Orchards have been restored with documented old varieties in collaboration with the Nordic Gene Bank and gene banks for fruit trees.

Most of the buildings are now used for a variety of activities. However, a dwelling house, barn, wash-house and privy have been retained in their original state. The architectural heritage exhibition shows crafts such as timber jointing and wooden shingle roofing. Tekla's House (Teklas hus) has been left largely as it was when the last family member, Tekla, moved out in 1989. There is no water or electricity and the house retains its 1900-1920's character.
