Eksjö - the unique wooden town

Sweden’s best-preserved wooden town- a title claimed by many towns; however, only a few are chosen. Eksjö Old Town and its many listed buildings certainly support our claim to this title!

In 1997, Eksjö was awarded the Europa Nostra Diploma for “the remarkable renovation of this important ensemble of traditional buildings, which have given new life to the old town centre”.

Eksjö is the very essence of a town formed and developed during the period of Sweden's great power. The majority of the lots in Old Town date back to the late 16th century. Many of the houses were built from mid- 1700's and onwards. Arendt de Roy is the same person as Arendt Byggmästare (master builder) and it is while walking on "his street" that you can see and breathe the busy street life that has taken part here for the past 400 years. Let's take a walk on the cobbled streets, from the river bridge up to the church! Maybe you will catch the soul of Eksjö and of times gone by.

During the period from 28 June to 14 August there are guided town walks on fixed times on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3 pm, with starting-point in front of the Tourist Information. Price: 50 SEK per person.
