Nature and culture reserves

To protect unique or delicate nature areas there are 219 assigned nature reserves and three culture reserves in our part of Småland.

The most spectacular in northern Småland is Skurugata near Eksjö, a 800 meter long and 7-24 meter wide rock ravine with up to 35 meter high walls. In summertime it’s not unusual to find snow at the bottom of the ravine. There is a trail in the reserve that takes you down and out of the ravine.

In southerna Småland you will find a completely different example – the arcipelago (övärld) of Västra Åsnen. In the reserve there are 200 different islands and a bird protection areas. It is a treasure for all bird lovers with ospreys and impressive white tailed eagles. The Värendsleden canoe trail goes through the reserve.

There are also three culture reserves in our area. Linnés Råshult outside Älmhult is the birth place of Carl von Linné (Carl Linneaus) and aims to preserve and bring to life the early 18th century landscape of his birthplace.

Åsens By outside Aneby is an example of what a Småland village looked like 100 years ago, with small fields enclosed by fences. Horses are used for some of the farm work.

Högarps by outside Vetlanda is a former village with five houses in an agricultural setting with fields and meadows maintained in traditional manners.
