The Kingdom of Crystal is the distinctive place that houses a total of 13 different glassworks, cottages, and studios – an area stretching across four municipalities between Växjö and Kalmar. It all started in 1742 when Kosta Glassworks was established in a location between the two cities. The name was derived from the founders, Koskull and Stael von Holstein. Skilled glass blowers from Germany came here, and the factories multiplied – up to 40 in total.
Now, a new journey towards the Glass Kingdom 2.0 begins. Many artists and designers are forging their own paths and often possess the skill to shape the glass themselves. There is much to experience throughout the year, and you will encounter a mix of true locals and newly arrived designers. The collaboration between masters and designers creates magic.
At the family owned Skruf Glassworks, a lot is produced for Swedish design, such as the “Dagg” vase. It may not be available for purchase here in Småland, but it is exciting to see how it is made.
You can even try blowing glass yourself at some places, such as Kosta Glass Center and Orranäs Glassworks
