Midsummer is celebrated as the longest day of the year, ideally in the countryside, making Sm\u00e5land the perfect place to enjoy the festivities. In almost every village in Sm\u00e5land, Midsummer is celebrated, and no matter where you are, you can expect to find a traditional celebration filled with community spirit. The tradition includes dancing, folk costumes, and plenty of laughter, with the highlight being the season\u2019s delicacies, such as sweet strawberries from the first harvest of the year.<\/p>\n

When Sm\u00e5land’s impressive nature is in full bloom, the Midsummer pole takes center stage. It is adorned with flowers from the meadow where it stands and leaves from the nearby forests. Around the Midsummer pole, both young and old gather to dance and sing together in traditional circle dances. To reconnect with Sm\u00e5land\u2019s cultural heritage, some dress in folk costumes, while others wear traditional Midsummer wreaths.<\/p>\n

After dancing in the circle, it’s time to enjoy all of Sm\u00e5land’s seasonal delicacies. A festive meal with locally produced treats such as boiled new potatoes served with fresh chives and sour cream. Fish from the Kalmar Strait, as well as meat, eggs, and cheese from local farmers, are just some of the many delicacies from Sm\u00e5land awaiting on the table. Meatballs are another Midsummer delicacy, often made from scratch with locally produced meat.<\/p>\n

And between the pickled herring and homemade crispbread, snaps songs are sung. Enjoy a craft-made drink from Sm\u00e5land producers. Here, you can choose between beer, snaps, and refreshing apple cider. To round off the meal, the first strawberries of the summer are served with cream or in a strawberry cake.<\/p>\n
