Sm\u00e5land has two unique wood-fired steamboats that operate in passenger traffic. Boxholm II from 1904 on Lake Sommen and \u00c5ngaren Thor from 1887 on Lake Helgasj\u00f6n.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n

The fine old S\/S Boxholm II is one of Sweden’s last wood-fired steamships in operation, with both boiler and engine in original condition. She has been sailing on Lake Sommen since 1904.<\/p>\n

Over the years, S\/S Boxholm II has undergone careful restoration work to preserve its authentic character, and today the ship offers guided tours where both history and nature take place. During the tours, passengers have the opportunity to enjoy the calm lake, the beautiful surroundings and at the same time learn about the role of the steamship in the history and development of the region. For those who want to experience something out of the ordinary, this is the perfect opportunity to gain an insight into a bygone era while enjoying a peaceful day on the water. \n Steamboat Thor \u2013 a waterborne cultural heritage <\/h3>\n

Sm\u00e5land’s other steamship is Sweden’s oldest wood-fired steamer, the \u00c5ngaren Thor. The boat operates on Lake Helgasj\u00f6n outside V\u00e4xj\u00f6 with its home port next to Kronoberg’s castle ruins. Here you have the opportunity to glide through a cultural monument and at the same time experience Sm\u00e5land from the sea.<\/p>\n

The steamer Thor was built in 1887 at Bergsunds Mekaniska verkstad in Stockholm and has always been on the Helgasj\u00f6n \u2013 both as a barge tow and with passenger traffic. During the summer, it travels on the Helgasj\u00f6n up to Sweden’s southernmost lock in \u00c5by. The lock was completed the same year as the steamer Thor and is still in use. Travelling the locks with Thor is a memory that will last a lifetime. The boat is also a must-see for anyone interested in steam power.<\/p>\n

From May to August, Thor makes various trips according to a timetable, most of which go to the lock. On some occasions, there may also be longer trips with dinner and overnight stays. Historically, the steamer was used for cargo and passenger traffic on the lake. The steamer Thor was donated to Sm\u00e5lands Museum in the 1950s and is now owned by Kulturparken Sm\u00e5land. You can now buy tickets for the popular rides there.<\/p>\n
