Sweden\u2019s second largest lake is surrounded by the diverse landscapes of the Sm\u00e5land region. Steep banks, dense forests and vibrant towns line the southern banks of Lake V\u00e4ttern. The lake is so large, it gives the region its very own microclimate. The upland area on the eastern shore of the lake is the home of \u00c4ppledalen, or \u201cApple Valley\u201d. The mild, maritime-like breezes make it a perfect place for apple cultivation. But it\u2019s not just apple growers who have taken advantage of the mild climate in this region.\u00a0 Over 800 years ago, King Ladul\u00e5s established his first royal residence on Visings\u00f6, the long island situated in the middle of the lake.<\/p>\n

\n The Gr\u00e4nnaberget is an area above the Gr\u00e4nna municipality in J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping. Its high position makes it the perfect place to get a panoramic view of Lake V\u00e4ttern and Visings\u00f6 Island. Here you can also find a caf\u00e9, an open-air museum and an open-air theatre. <\/p>\n

Rock candy has its home in Gr\u00e4nna where it is made in many sizes, flavours and colours. The original is red and white with a peppermint test. The Swedish word for rock candy is \u2018polkagris\u2019. There are many rock candy makers in Gr\u00e4nna that not only sell but also offer demonstrations and allow visitors to make their own rock candy.<\/p>\n

\n Take the ferry to Visings\u00f6 <\/h3>\n

The ferry to Visings\u00f6 departs from Gr\u00e4nna and takes you across Lake V\u00e4ttern in about 25 minutes. Both pedestrians, bicycles, and cars are welcome onboard, making it easy to explore the island. With frequent departures year-round, the ferry is the most convenient and scenic way to travel to Visings\u00f6.<\/p>\n
