Three kilometers south of Gr\u00e4nna you will find idyllic R\u00f6ttle By. A genuine cultural and historical environment with wooden houses from both the 18th and 19th centuries, two historic mills, a dramatic waterfall from the R\u00f6ttle\u00e5n River and a quiet marina.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n

\n R\u00f6ttle <\/h3>\n

R\u00f6ttle By has had a great importance for the Gr\u00e4nna area for many centuries. Today, the red cottages are populated by summer guests and the scenic area attracts both locals and visiting tourists. The first time R\u00f6ttle is mentioned is the year 1279. The village was then called Rytlofors, which means \u201cthe roaring rapids\u201d.<\/p>\n

\n Ancestry from the Middle Ages <\/h3>\n
\n

In the Middle Ages, Nydala Monastery owned several flour mills in the village. In 1641, Count Per Brahe, the younger owner of R\u00f6ttle By, became the owner. He invested in expanding the hydroelectric power and an industrial village was established with a series of workshops along the R\u00f6ttle\u00e5n River. Traces of old house foundations and dams can be seen in the ravine. Two mills still remain among the picturesque red cottages. The two mills, Rasmus mill and Jerusalem mill, bear witness to the village’s heyday in the 17th century. In the summer, you can watch flour being ground in stone at Rasmus mill, while being told about the village’s history.<\/p>\n

\n Hiss from falls and treetops <\/h3>\n

For nature lovers and botanists, the R\u00f6ttle\u00e5n valley is a real gem. Here you will find the beginning of the V\u00e4stan\u00e5 nature reserve, which extends almost 5 km south. The landscape around R\u00f6ttle By is varied and beautiful. Several paths in the area make it easy to get around. R\u00f6ttle\u00e5n is 12 km long and gets its water from the lakes Bunn and \u00d6ren. The fall height is 108 meters down to Lake V\u00e4ttern. Both salmon trout and grayling go up the river and spawn. At the mouth is the village of R\u00f6ttle.<\/p>\n

\n Walk to the harbor <\/h3>\n
\n

Discover R\u00f6ttle by walking the R\u00f6ttlestigen, the hiking trail in R\u00f6ttle By, which starts at the parking lot and extends down to the harbor. The hiking trail is 1.3 km long and goes through the village, past mills, along the waterfall, over bridges, hilly terrain, a gravel road and paths. Down at the river’s outlet in V\u00e4ttern is R\u00f6ttle Harbor with the steamboat pier where steamboats docked until the 1930s. Relax with a picnic or barbecue at the well-maintained picnic and barbecue area and take a refreshing dip in the clear water.<\/p>\n
