In Småland, camping means staying close to nature - often by a lake or in a bay. The choice is up to you: peace and quiet, or a wide range of activities that will please the whole family?
In Småland, camping means getting up close and personal with nature. There are more than 60 campsites throughout the region, ranging from resorts to unpowered campgrounds with simple facilities. Here are some tips for some of Småland's all campings, ask your local tourist office for further tips and information.
Camping is for everyone
The five star Västervik Resort Lysingsbadet Camping in the middle of Västervik's archipelago is one of Sweden's largest camping sites with fun activities for both young and old, such as fishing, adventure swimming baths, playgrounds, water slides, entertainment, and much more. Everyone will find something to do here!
Sjöstugans Camping in Älmhult, not far from IKEA Museum, is beautifully located by lake Möckeln. In addition to the campsite, there is also a hotel, hostel and cabins, as well as a restaurant and a lovely sandy beach. The location truly is ideal - close to the center of Älmhult, yet close up to nature. The river Helge å passes Sjöstugan and is great paddling water. Sjöstugan and its owner, Jonas Olsson, were awarded the prize "Tourism Entrepreneur of the Year in Southern Småland" in 2017.
First Camp Gunnarsö enjoys a scenic location by the Kalmar Strait, 3 km southeast of the centre of Oskarshamn, near the Gotland ferry terminal. A campsite and holiday village for the whole family, beautifully situated in Småland's archipelago. There are wonderful places to swim, trampolines, cliffs and sandy beaches. The Blix Kids’ Club offers free supervised activities during the summer. You can also choose between canoes, rowing boats, pedal boats, SUP boards, adventure mini golf, pedal bikes, bicycles, beach volleyball and walking trail - it's an Eldorado for adventure seekers.
Tingsryd Resort is a family-friendly, comfortable and fun campsite. Choose between a camping pitch or stay in a cottage or mobile home. By the beach you find a playground, mini golf, beach volley and even a little spa with a jacuzzi. And, the best thing - during the summer months a real circus camps here, and they have performances every evening in July.
Grännastrandens Camping is a four-star campsite with cabins and camping pitches. The campsite has a fantastic view of Visingsö - the pearl of Lake Vättern, and lies within walking distance to the center of Gränna. There will be karaoke, candy cane making ('polkagrisar'), and lots of jumping on the bouncy pillows. Next to the campsite is a BMX track, skate park and Äppelviken's Adventure Park.
Vita Sands Camping is located 25 km south of Kalmar – and you’re invited to enjoy the sun and sea. One of the best sandy beaches in Kalmar is found here, with the 160-metre-long jetty making the spot a favourite for people of all ages. As an added bonus, the campsite is in close proximity to other tourist attractions, including the Crystal Kingdom and Kalmar Castle.
Vimmerby Camping, a family campsite on the banks of Nossen Lake, is less than 10 minutes from Astrid Lindgren’s World. With a range of accommodation, you can choose between campsites, cottages, apartments and a hostel. There are plenty of activities for the whole family, including evening entertainment, beaches, boat rentals, mini golf and saunas.
Camp close to nature & animals
At Hätteboda Wilderness Camping, situated amidst the Småland forests, you will experience the real wilderness. The campsite is carefully built to melt into nature and not to disturb the animals. It is completely organic with no electricity or running water. Water is pumped up by hand and you chop wood to make fires. Here you can fish, swim, paddle in the lake, or just take a walk in the woods and enjoy the silence and peacefulness.
In a private nature reserve on a peninsula in Lake Åsnen you find Getnö Lake Åsnen Resort. The nature camping, beautifully located close to the lakeshore, has 150 large sites, 120 of them with electricity. Canoes, kayaks and boats are available for rent, and children can attend nature school where they enjoy fishing trips, viking adventures and learn more about nature.
With a wonderful view of two coves and several islands, and where the Öland Bridge breaks the horizon beautifully in the south, you find Kalmar Camping on the headland Rafshagsudde. The scenic seaside family campsite has plots with plenty of space and a sea view that is constantly present.
At the 4-star family campground KustCamp Gamleby, you can enjoy swimming in the ocean with a sandy beach in the bay, well protected from algae. A unique, child-friendly lagoon makes it possible for everyone to swim in sea water, at comfortable lake temperatures.
Isaberg Mountain Resort is a great place for those who enjoy outdoor life and nature experiences. Bike, hike or paddle in beautiful surroundings. Nearby are golf courses, and there is a nice adventure playground and high-rope course for those who want a challenge, one of them adapted for children. There is also a moose park at Isaberg, built with respect for the moose and their living conditions.
Stay close to nature with a guaranteed lake view at Hultsfred Strandcamping. Walk along the beachwalk, take a swim or go on an aventure on the lake. Hultsfred Strandcamping has kayaks, canoes, stand up paddleboards and pedal boats for rent.
Campsites close to cities
In surroundings of natural beauty on a natural peninsula in Kalmarsund, Stensö Camping is situated within walking distance of the city centre and Kalmar Castle. Stensö is an appreciated recreational area for both the people of Kalmar as well as tourists. Some of Kalmar's most popular hiking trails pass through the campsite.
Between Jönköping and Huskvarna, yet close to nice nature experiences, you will find the campsite at Villa Björkhagen. The campsite is situated by the nature reserve Rosenlundsbankarna with a spectacular view of Lake Vättern. Close to the campsite lies the water park Rosenlundsbadet.
At the lake Helgasjön lies Evedals Camping Växjö, just six kilometers from Växjö's city center. Choose between plots with electricity on both grass and asfalt, or stay in a cottage with 2 or 4 beds. There are also two swimming places, as well as mini golf, adventure golf, boat and canoe rental, and fishing possibilites. If you want to take part in what the city has to offer, Växjö City and the shopping mall Grand Samarkand are not far away.
