World Heritage Site – southern Öland

Öland World Heritage Site – an outstanding natural landscape and cultural heritage. This district was recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. The reasons include Södra Öland’s distinctive agricultural landscape, which is unlike anywhere else on earth, thanks to its limestone bedrock, mild climate and the island’s geographical position, which have created special conditions for life here. In addition, the millennia-long impact of the inhabitants on the area, dating back to the Stone Age, has played a major role. One of the best ways to experience the World Heritage Site on southern Öland is by hiking. Over 140 km of hiking trails are available, offering opportunities to explore and appreciate these often unique landscapes.
