Kalmar Castle, with its battlements and towers, is the best preserved Renaissance castle in Sweden, and much of it looks as it did in the 16th century when the castle acquired its current appearance. Over the years, numerous wars, major political events, and court intrigues have taken place here. Today, Kalmar Castle is a symbol of the city thanks to its central location, and it is a vibrant site open to visitors year-round, offering exhibitions, events, guided tours, and activities for both adults and children. There is also a restaurant and café on site where you can buy meals and enjoy a coffee break. In December, a popular Christmas market is also held at the castle, where holiday traditions come to life with a market, concerts, and exhibitions.

Since the 1990s, the estate has been rebuilt from a dilapidated site into a modern hotel with a spa and restaurant. Here, visitors can also explore the beautiful rose garden and candle workshop.

Kronoberg Castle Ruins

The ruins of Kronoberg Castle date back to the 14th century and have been a strategically important site throughout history. When the border with Denmark ran through Kronoberg, the fortress was expanded into a stronghold by King Gustav Vasa in the 16th century. Today, the castle ruins are closed to visitors due to the risk of collapse, but they can still be viewed from the outside. From here, the steamship Thor also departs from the shore of Lake Helgasjön.

Borgholm Castle

On the island of Öland lies Borgholm Castle, with a history on the island spanning over 900 years. Once a grand Baroque palace, it is today a well-preserved castle ruin and one of Öland’s largest and most famous visitor attractions. Here you will find various exhibitions and activities for all ages, and during the summer concerts are held in the inner courtyard as well as a range of other events.

Solliden Palace was completed in 1906 and was built as a summer residence for Sweden’s future Queen Victoria, in order to improve her poor health in the unique climate of Öland. The architecture of the palace was inspired by the Italian villa of Victoria’s physician, Axel Munthe, and the queen spent a large part of her life here. Today, Solliden is once again used as a private summer residence by the current Swedish royal family. The beautiful gardens surrounding the palace are open to visitors, and there is also a café on the grounds.
