Astrid Lindgren’s World

Here, fairy tales come to life! Those who grew up with Astrid Lindgren are familiar with the places and characters: Pippi Longstocking and Villa Villekulla! Ronja the Robber’s Daughter and Matt’s Fort! And of course, Emil in Lönneberga and all the others! Just come here and immerse yourself in the stories: Astrid Lindgren’s World is one of the largest outdoor theaters in Europe – and one of the best places to play and have fun.

Enter the fairy tales!

Located in the heart of Småland, in the town of Vimmerby, Astrid Lindgren’s World is just a stone’s throw from Astrid Lindgren’s childhood home. Nearly half a million visitors come each year to meet Pippi Longstocking, Emil in Lönneberga, Ronja the Robber’s Daughter, and all the others. Every summer, eight to nine stories from Astrid Lindgren’s rich treasure trove of tales are brought to life. There are up to 50 performances per day on the seven different stages. Additionally, children can simply play to their heart’s content: leap in the hay at Katthult farm from Emil, jump over Hell’s Gap at Ronja’s Robber’s Castle, slide with Karlsson on the Roof, and – not to forget – play the “Don’t Touch the Ground” game.

Characters

Rosendal and Cherry Valley appear in Astrid Lindgren’s novel “The Brothers Lionheart”. The fantastic adventure novel about Jonathan and his little brother Skorpan (Rusky) in the land of Nangijala is the model for these experience worlds in the theme park and theater park Astrid Lindgren’s World. The story of the brothers’ struggle from the peaceful Cherry Valley, who fight against the tyrant Tengil and the dragon Katla, is aimed at slightly older children. The dramatic plot alternates between Cherry Valley and Rosendal. The theater plays are performed alternately in Rosendal and Cherry Valley. In Astrid Lindgren’s World, you’ll meet not only Pippi Longstocking, Tommy, and Annika but also Emil in Lönneberga and the entire Svensson family! You can visit Karlsson on the Roof and Ronja at the robber’s castle! And if there’s no performance in Villa Villekulla at the moment, you can explore every nook and cranny and play there! And perhaps Pippi, Tommy, and Annika are there too – blending in with the visitors! It’s not just theater being played, and the audience doesn’t have to sit quietly. No! Everywhere in the park, both young and old can go on an adventure and leap over Hell’s Gap themselves in Mattisborgen. And at Katthult farm from Emil, you can carve figures in the carpenter’s shed!

Experience the adventure!

In Villa Villekulla lives Pippi Longstocking, and with Pippi, it’s always full of excitement. Here she battles pirates – or celebrates birthdays! And the next moment, she’s playing pranks with the policemen Kling and Klang. At Katthult, you can experience what life was like on a farm a hundred years ago, wandering over the fields and playing right under the ancient oaks, where Astrid Lindgren herself played as a child! The oak grove wasn’t far away either: Her childhood home, Näs farm, is right nearby! The adventure then continues on to Mattisborgen and the vast Mattis forest. Here you can visit the robbers’ prison, try Glatte-Per’s bed, or dare to venture into Hell’s Gap. Ronja, Mattis, Lovis, and all the other robbers are there too! For families with their own food, there are many different picnic spots in the park. All visitors are also warmly welcomed to the various restaurants, where you can enjoy delicious and generous meals.

Food

Astrid Lindgren’s World prepares everything from scratch and uses ingredients from the region. Many recipes are Småland classics, such as potato pancakes with bacon, one of the most popular dishes. Of course, they also offer the typical Swedish meatballs and pancakes. Astrid Lindgren’s World is open daily from mid-May to the end of August. In September, the park is open as a playground every day, with theater performances held on weekends.

Autumn Market

During the Swedish autumn holidays at the end of October/early November, there’s a lot happening in the park! A traditional Småland craft market is held – and of course, there’s also theater. Additionally, there will be plenty of entertainment. A Småland autumn market includes crafts and local delicacies, as well as lots of fun and games for the kids. The autumn market at Astrid Lindgren’s World is a truly cozy market in old Swedish style.
