Here you will be greeted by cobblestone streets and charming low houses. And Visingsö is just a short ferry ride away.
Picturesque Gränna
Gränna, a charming small town on the southern shore of Lake Vättern, is known as the birthplace of the famous explorer Salomon August Andrée (1854-1897). Andrée became famous worldwide for his failed balloon expedition to the North Pole in 1897. At Gränna Museum you can follow Andrée’s arduous journey, from the preparations to the fateful journey, and hear the story of the mysterious end of the expedition.
Today, however, the city is best known for its lollipops. Making them is a craft and it is fascinating to visit one of the many manufacturers and watch as the fresh dough is transformed into symmetrically striped sticks.
At Gränna harbour there are a number of charming restaurants and cafés, where you can enjoy both good food and a beautiful view of Lake Vättern. The atmosphere here is always lively, with a mix of local flavours and international influences. From the harbour there are also frequent ferry trips to Visingsö, the historic island that attracts with its scenic landscapes, cultural attractions and traditional Remmalag.

Historical Visingsö
Visingsö has a long and exciting history, with traces of people since the Stone Age. Swedish kings began using the island as early as the 12th century, and during the 17th century the powerful Brahe family ruled from Visingsborg – whose castle ruins still stand near the harbour. The island is full of attractions, and one of the most charming ways to explore it is with the classic Remmalagen – horse and carriage tours that depart from the harbour during the summer. For those who prefer to get around on their own, cycling is another popular option, either with your own or one rented on site.
Visingsö is not only a place for historical experiences but also an oasis for nature lovers. Here you can hike along the beautiful paths that take you through lush forests and past picturesque views of Lake Vättern. For those who want a more active experience, there is the opportunity to fish, swim or rent a boat to explore the island’s surroundings from the water. Another highlight is the beautiful gardens in the old rectory area, where you can stroll among plants and flowers that have stood for centuries.
