According to legend, Visingsö was created when the giant, called Vist, tossed a tuft of grass into Lake Vättern for his wife to step on. Just like a thousand years ago, the tuft is still full of life today! Visingsö Castle in Näs is often referred to as Sweden’s oldest royal castle and was built by King Sverker the Elder in the 1150s. The king and his entourage travelled to the castle where hunts, festivities, and important meetings were held. In 1318, the castle was seized by rebels from Småland in an uprising against King Birger and was burned down. Today, parts of the ruins remain for viewing on the headland. One can almost feel the echoes of history within the walls.
