The Legend of Blå Jungfrun’s Stones

During the summer, you can visit Blå Jungfrun on day trips from Oskarshamn and Byxelkrok or with your own boat. The solitude and inaccessibility make Blå Jungfrun an exciting destination. Here, you will encounter rugged terrain and significant differences in elevation. Wooden walkways will guide you around the island, leading you to a lush grove of centuries-old, gnarled trees, fascinating caves with narrow entrances that open up to impressive interiors, and geological potholes. On one of Blå Jungfrun’s cliffs, you will find a Troje fortress where you can seek desired fertility, good fortune in fishing, or perhaps wish for calm seas on the way back. If you make it all the way to the top of Blå Jungfrun, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the mainland coast, Kalmarsund, and Öland, well worth the effort.

If you visit Blå Jungfrun, remember not to take even a small stone with you when leaving the island. According to myth, anyone who takes a stone from Blå Jungfrun will be plagued by misfortune until the stone is returned to the island. In fact, Oskarshamn municipality receives stones every year from remorseful tourists who have decided not to unnecessarily challenge fate. And every year, the municipality ensures that the stones are transported back to the mysterious island in Kalmarsund. It’s the safest course of action.

Perhaps the isolated location has contributed to the many legends that have emerged around the island’s history. The wild beauty of the rock formations, shaped by the inland ice, has given rise to speculation about what goes on in one of Sweden’s most famous national parks. And indeed, it’s fascinating to imagine what might have taken place here, on an island that was inhabited as early as the Stone Age.

In the past, it was believed that a divine being lived on the island. The area was considered extremely dangerous for seafarers, who were more frequently hit by storms here than anywhere else. Sailors have avoided the place for a long time, and the stories about the island are countless. Perhaps the most famous and enduring myth is the one about witches flying to Blåkulla on their broomsticks every Maundy Thursday to meet other witches.
