The Royal Ship Kronan

At Kalmar County Museum you can see the find made by divers about 30 years ago. The regal ship Kronan capsized, exploded and sank on June 1, 1676 during a battle between the Swedish and the combined Danish-Dutch fleets. The exhibition at the museum showcases finds from over 40 years of marine archaeological research, including Sweden’s largest gold coin hoard, two of the largest marine silver coin hoards and an impressive number of bronze cannons. These artifacts provide a unique insight into life on board and the seafaring of the Swedish great power era.

Kings & Wrecks

Curious about kings, shipwrecks, battles and seafaring? At Västerviks Museum you can dive into history and explore shipwrecks from the 16th century. Discover the story behind some of the Vasa kings’ many ships – such as the Elephant, the Kraveln and Mars. How were these giant ships built and what could it have been like to be on board a ship in the middle of a fiery battle far out in the Baltic Sea? This and much more is told in the new royal exhibition that focuses on the maritime history of the 16th century and the early days of large ships.
