Fishing in Småland
Few areas in Sweden offer such a diversity of fishing opportunities as Småland. There is fishing for everyone here, regardless of the method or species you want to catch. Småland is rich in lakes and also has a long coastline.
Tips on some fishing waters
Thanks to the diversity of fish species and the environment they live in, fishing also differs. Depending on what fish you want to catch or what experience you are looking for, Småland offers a wide range of different fishing methods. Rapid rivers and streams with rocky bottoms are perfect for fly fishing. Large, deep lakes where the fish lurk in the depths and where trolling by boat is the best method. Mirror-like forest lakes that provide a quiet moment in the stressful life, perfect for taking out a casting rod or fishing. For those who want to enjoy the salty sea breeze and the more rolling waves, the archipelago and sea fishing are suitable.
One of the many great fishing spots in Småland is Högsby Municipality. If you dream about catching a large pike, take a trip to lake Allgunnen, a real pearl in the wilderness with pike guarantee. With a tourist fishing license you are able to fish in 29 lakes and running waters divided into ten fish conservation areas within Högsby Municipality.
Stora Hammarsjön‘s fishing area consists of 400 hectares of water. Here, stocked trout and rainbow trout swim together with perch and pike. You can choose a new fishing lake every day and decide what catch you want. Or how about fishing for roach and bream in Hulingen, tench and eel in Gnötteln or roach and carp in Ånglegöl?
Lake Åsnen has what we call a lake archipelago with about 1000 islands and a unique coastline. The total coastline, islands included, is 740 kilometers long, so there is lots to discover. The lake is shallow with just three meter average depth, and the old pike wait patiently for their baits, hidden in the reeds. Pike fishing is especially good here.
Lake Vättern is Sweden’s second largest lake, with crystal clear water and many species of fish. What about 31 species of fish, a visibility depth of 17 meters and 516 km of shore where high cliffs in many places provide unbeatable views of the lake? The fact that the fishing is also world-class for several species such as char, lake salmon and pike doesn’t make matters any worse.
In Mönsterås municipality you can find your own “fishing spot” along the coast. The moraine archipelago that dominates the area around Mönsterås is unique to Kalmarsund. In the Mönsterås archipelago (Mönsterås, Timmernabben and Pataholm) there is good fishing for pike and perch.

Crayfish cages are set out in lakes and streams at dusk, and when night falls, people hope for a big catch. There are several ways to protect nature, and according to the Swedish Environmental Code, the County Administrative Board (‘Länsstyrelsen’) may form nature reserves and bird sanctuaries. In many cases nature needs to be managed, so that the species living there can survive. Nature reserves are the most common form of protection of natural areas, and they can be formed to preserve biodiversity, to conserve and preserve valuable natural environments or to meet the need for outdoor recreation.
