Kroppkakor
If you’re curious to try kroppkakor, there are many opportunities. Here we’ve gathered a selection of restaurants in Småland and on Öland that offer kroppkakor — either to enjoy on-site or to take away. And don’t forget the typical accompaniments!
Öland or Småland kroppkakor?
As is common with traditional dishes, there are many different recipes. The biggest difference between Öland-style and Småland-style kroppkakor is usually the color: the batter for the Öland variety contains mostly raw grated potatoes and only a small amount of cooked potato, which gives the kroppkaka a grey hue. In Småland, the proportion of cooked potatoes is usually larger, resulting in a whiter kroppkaka. Another factor that affects flavor and texture is when in the year the potatoes are harvested; summer potatoes have less starch than winter potatoes.
Kroppkakor are generally gluten-, lactose- and milk‑free, but be sure to ask just in case, because flour is sometimes included.
Taste your way through and see which type you like best! Here are some places that serve kroppkakor. It’s also common to buy them to take home or enjoy on a picnic. Many producers sometimes visit local food stores and sell freshly made, hot kroppkakor from there. They are often eaten with cream, butter, and lingonberries — although some of us feel that the lingonberries steal the flavor of the kroppkakan.
