The Museum of Legends
The Museum of Legends in Ljungby is located in the heart of the Land of Legends, surrounded by countless places steeped in folklore. Here, you can explore the fun and engaging museum and listen to exciting tales about gnomes, trolls, and giants – just to name a few of the many mythical creatures found in Småland.
The Museum of Legends is a vibrant, living museum that keeps the storytelling tradition alive. You can explore on your own among ghosts and restless spirits, or join a storytelling guide. The museum is open all year round, but especially lively in the summer. That’s when it’s extra fun for children – they can go on a GPS-guided fairy tale treasure hunt around the museum or take part in a magical storytelling session.
Storytelling tradition
It’s no coincidence that the Museum of Legends is located in the Ljungby area. The surrounding, magical Land of Legends in southwestern Småland has carried storytelling traditions for hundreds of years. Back then, stories were passed from mouth to mouth, from one generation to the next, in a time when vast forests and great distances separated neighbors. People gathered in small cottages on long winter evenings to listen to tales from the old Småland.
Legendary places
You can visit the classic and mythical sites from old legends yourself. Troll hills, sacred springs, dragon treasures, and the Water Spirit’s pools are all marked and ready to explore. These places are often beautifully situated, and your journey takes you through the typical Småland landscape. Use the free “Land of Legends” app, available for iOS and Android, to find them. You’ll find it wherever you usually download apps. At each legendary site, there’s a story cabinet where the local legend is written down for you to read.
