Kingdom of crystals
Mouth-blown glass is one of the most well-known craft traditions in Sweden. What we know as the Kingdom of Crystals is nestled in the forests of Småland between Växjö and Kalmar. Here, there are thirteen different glassworks and studio hot shops, each with its own distinct features. Everything from the largest and oldest Kosta glassworks to small studio hot shops with one or two skilled glassmakers who often are also their own designers.

Glass has been produced here since 1742, and different types of glass – both art and utility glass – are produced here. The unique feature is that you are always welcome into the warm hot shop to step up to the hot furnaces and see the magic created from the glowing mass. Along with the glassblowers, the designers continuously stretch the possibilities of glass, and many glassblowing techniques have been developed through experiments in the Småland glass hot shops. Each glass hot shop and glass artist has their own unique style, making visits to the different hot shops special and exciting. Many of the glassworks have fantastic exhibitions and all have shops where you can buy glass at favourable prices. In some places, you can even try blowing glass yourself under the guidance of a master.

Beyond the heat of the hot shops in the Kingdom of Crystals there is much else to experience. Take part in cultural history and the nature of Småland. For the adventurous, Europe’s largest zipline awaits. Calmer activities include fishing, hiking, and cycling – perhaps on a railbike. Wildlife can be seen up close in moose parks and in the Kosta safari park. You can also stay in glass houses inside the Safari Park or at Kosta Boda Art Hotel filled with art glass and with a bar made of glass.
