The Kingdom of Crystal

The history of the Kingdom of Crystal began as early as the 18th century when the first glassworks was founded in Kosta in 1742. Then as now, the riches of the forest – wood for fuel and sand from the ground – were used to create glass. Over the centuries, more mills sprang up in the region, and the Kingdom of Crystal quickly became the center of Swedish glass.

The Kingdom of Crystal is more than just glass – it is a story about Småland’s industrial history, about creativity and about pride. Around the glassworks there are cafes, art exhibitions, nature experiences and opportunities for both shopping and immersion in the history of craftsmanship. A visit here is a journey into a sparkling cultural heritage, in the middle of the Småland landscape.

There is much to see for a visitor to the Kingdom of Crystal. Both world-class glass and art glass are made in the area, and you are welcome to come right up to the heat of the kilns to see it being created.

All the glassworks have their own shops and you can always shop at great prices – both second-hand, art glass and prime glassworks.
