Before travelling with your four-legged friend, a bit of preparation is required: Make sure your dog has a valid EU pet passport and that all important vaccinations are up to date, especially against rabies. In Sweden, a microchip for identification is also required and upon entry you must declare your dog to customs.

Transport in Sweden

Travelling by ferry to Småland or Öland is no problem with a dog. Many ferry operators, such as TT-Line and Stena Line, offer pet-friendly cabins and also have designated areas for dogs, allowing four-legged companions to travel comfortably.
Dogs are generally allowed on public transport such as trains (SJ) and buses (Länstrafiken), but they may need to sit in specific sections and are not allowed on seats. In urban public transport, small dogs usually travel for free, while larger dogs may require a ticket. Be sure to check local transport regulations for pets in advance.

Swedish dog regulations

In Sweden, the dog needs to have a strict leash requirement in forests and on rural trails from 1 March to 20 August to protect wildlife and their young. In national parks and nature reserves, on campsites, and in cities, dogs must be kept on a leash all year round. Dogs are generally not allowed on playgrounds, cemeteries, or public bathing areas. You must pick up and dispose of your dog’s waste. When out in nature with your dog, make sure it always remains within sight and keeps a distance from other animals. Be considerate of nearby people so your dog does not frighten anyone.

Along the coasts of Småland and Öland, as well as on the shores of the many lakes, dogs can play and swim as much as they like. However, make sure to check whether a beach or bathing spot is specifically designated as a dog beach. You can find dog-friendly swimming areas in your destination by searching for the Swedish term “hundbad” on Google Maps. It’s also a good idea to check water quality with the local municipality beforehand: During algal blooms, neither humans nor animals should swim, as the water can become toxic due to the high concentration of algae, especially in shallow areas close to shore.

City visits with your dog

Many Swedish cities have designated dog parks in public green areas where dogs can run freely and take a break from the busy city environment.

Jönköping

In Jönköping, Stadsparken (Jönköping City Park) and Kålgårdsparken are popular spots to visit. A walk around Lake Rocksjön is also a lovely way to enjoy nature with your dog. There is a designated dog swimming area at Lake Västersjön, close to the public bathing area.

Kalmar

In Kalmar, there are spacious dog parks close to the city in Kalmarsundsparken and Skärgårdsparken, as well as slightly further out in Funkabo, Smedby, and Lindsdal. Four-legged friends can cool off at Stensö in southern Kalmar near the campsite, or on Svinö, where there is even a dog shower.

Växjö

The most central dog parks in Växjö are located near the Teknikum gymnasium and on Folkungagatan. There are also areas by Lake Trummen close to the university, and further out in Öjaby and Sandsbro, where dogs can run freely. A dog swimming spot can be found north of Växjö on the island of Hissö.

Other places

If you’re travelling elsewhere in Småland and want to give your dog a play break, simply search for the Swedish terms “hundrastgård” (dog park) or “hundrastplats” (dog exercise area) in your map app to find the nearest location.
