Welcoming spring on Walpurgis Night
Valborg (known as Walpurgis in English) is traditionally celebrated in Sweden on April 30th and is the festival where spring is officially welcomed. Large bonfires are lit across the country to say goodbye to winter, and people celebrate with friends and family, often accompanied by lots of singing. Coincidentally, King Carl XVI Gustaf also celebrates his birthday on the last day of April. May 1st is Labour Day and thus a public holiday.
Våffeldagen – the Day of the Waffle
The waffle is given its own day in Sweden, celebrated on March 25th. Many people bring out their waffle irons and serve waffles for the traditional Fika at home. There are no strict rules for how the waffles should be eaten, but they are usually served with jam and whipped cream alongside coffee.
