Öland and Islands in Småland
There is truly something special about being surrounded by water! In Småland, there are many islands to visit – especially in the archipelago, but also larger islands such as Bolmsö, islands in Lake Vättern, and of course the island of Öland off Småland’s eastern coast. Welcome to discover Öland and the islands of Småland!
The Archipelago in Småland
Do you dream of rocky skerries, thousands of small islands, and gently rolling waves? Småland offers a fantastic archipelago setting in the form of the Tjust and Misterhult Archipelagos. Here, you can island-hop, enjoy peace and idyllic surroundings, and experience the very best of the South Swedish archipelago.
Tjust Archipelago
In north-eastern Småland, just outside Västervik, lies the magical Tjust Archipelago – a world of beautiful islands and skerries stretching along the Baltic Sea coast. The Tjust Archipelago is unique and differs quite a bit from the neighboring parts of Småland’s coastline. Here you’ll find many long rift valleys that run through the landscape and continue out into the sea bays. In the Tjust Archipelago, there are several islands you can reach by archipelago boats. You’ll also find shops, restaurants, and a wide range of activities.
Misterhult Archipelago
The Misterhult Archipelago is one of Småland’s largest nature reserves and offers an outstanding archipelago experience with its approximately 2,000 islands, islets, and skerries. Here, you can explore unspoiled nature, where wave-washed granite rocks, rich flora, and abundant wildlife – both on land and beneath the surface – await discovery. The archipelago is known for its authentic fishing villages and historic village centers, as well as its unique bird and seal protection areas. For those seeking peace and quiet, there are plenty of opportunities to go kayaking or hiking on one of the beautiful islands.

Öland – The Island of Sun and Wind
The island of Öland, just off the eastern coast of Småland, leaves no one untouched, no matter the season. Here, you can stroll along soft sandy beaches with waves lapping at your toes, walk across the alvar plains with skylarks singing overhead and the scent of thyme in the air, or feel the famous Öland winds whipping around the corner on a crisp winter’s day. Enjoy a meal at sunset, experience Borgholms slott from centuries past, cycle toward the horizon, or take a refreshing swim. Getting to Öland from the mainland is easy. A bridge connects the city of Kalmar with Öland. There is also a car ferry from Oskarshamn to Byxelkrok in northern Öland, and a bicycle ferry from Kalmar to Färjestaden.
Cycling is Popular
Getting around the island on two wheels is very popular and a great way to experience the nature. Along the roads, you’ll find flea markets, cafés, swimming spots, and pastures with grazing animals. A tip for those who can’t bring their own bike is to rent one locally. There are also various cycling packages available that include accommodation and a packed lunch.

Visit the beautiful Blå Jungfrun National Park. Given the island’s seclusion and the color of its silhouette, it’s no wonder that Blå Jungfrun has become the legendary Blåkulla of fairy tales and folklore.
In the summer, boat tours to Blå Jungfrun are offered with the M/S Solkust and M/S Solfrun. The tours depart from Oskarshamn and Byxelkrok. Take the opportunity to explore the giant’s kettles and caves, wander through the intriguing labyrinth, and visit the beautiful stone beach.

Visingsö
Visingsö is located in Lake Vättern, Sweden’s second-largest lake. The island has a long and fascinating history, with traces of human activity dating back to the Stone Age. As early as the 12th century, Swedish kings began using the island, and during the 17th century, the powerful Brahe family ruled from Visingsborg – whose castle ruins still stand near the harbor.
Take the Ferry from Gränna
The ferry to Visingsö departs from Gränna and crosses Lake Vättern in about 25 minutes. Pedestrians, bicycles, and cars are all welcome on board, making it easy to explore the island. With frequent departures throughout the year, the ferry is the most convenient and scenic way to travel to Visingsö.
Experiences
Visingsö offers many experiences, such as riding the famous remmalag (horse-drawn carriage). You can also go horseback riding, explore the impressive ruins, or walk and cycle through the majestic oak forest.

Åsnen – Lake Archipelago
The Åsnen area features a unique freshwater archipelago with more than a thousand islands, 700 km of shoreline, and varied nature that is easy to explore. Here, delicate deciduous forests filled with birdsong meet calm marshlands reminiscent of Lapland. Sweden’s 30th and newest national park offers a mix of shimmering deciduous forests, Småland’s coniferous woods, and marshlands that are strikingly similar to those in northern Sweden!
Activities
There is a wonderful range of relaxed activities – hike, paddle, or cycle – or best of all, combine all three! The very best experiences come from booking guided activities, such as an osprey safari or a kayaking tour in the national park. The area also offers a wide variety of accommodations, and you can enjoy delicious local food at the many farm shops around the lake.
